DF65 Scratch Racing – Sat 30th May

Hi Skippers
Luckily the rain from earlier in the week cleared & we enjoyed a mostly sunny morning with a strong SW breeze that went Westerly as the morning progressed. 10 boats started – 10 scratch achieved.
All but one boat started on A rigs – one had his A+ on but it quickly came evident that B rigs were the order of the day & a quick change occurred after the 2nd race.

Highlight of the Day : good to give Kim MItchell #42 a pat on the back for a very consistent performance giving him a well deserved win on 12 points – 4 x 1st places, 6 x 2nd places – I can’t imagine every dropping 2 second places but Kim did today !

Thanks to Craig for putting the results on sailscores so we knew how well we were going or not ! Thanks to Tony for trailer duties.

Saturday IOM Social scratch racing results

Hi Skippers,

What a fun afternoon for the 8 skippers sailing our social scratch sailing day. We had West / SW winds from 3 knots to 15 knots on the gusts with plenty of lifts and knocks to keep us all on our toes.

John Halloran #83 and Doug Turner #82 were neck and neck for the first 6 heats with both tied at the break for 1st place.

The last 4 heats were intense with one error ( touch on a mark or missing the windward mark) proving very costly. Holding your nerve was key.

A huge welcome to Craig Wiley our Commodore for joining our IOM fleet with a late model TS2 #28. Craig will join us on our Winter H’cap series.

Also welcome to an old club member David Hill #55 who joined us today as a guest.

Congrats to the place getters:

1st John Halloran #83 14 points and 4 race wins

2nd Simon Kellett #141 17 points

3rd Doug Turner #82 21 points

DF65 Summer Scratch Series – Saturday 16th May

Hi Skippers
The good news was sunshine, a few clouds but no rain – on the flip side we had a flukey variable direction breeze which kept all skippers on their toes. Scratch racing with 12 boats on the water including a visitor from Tassie – one had issues with a rudder servo & did not sail. All but one had A+ rigs.

Highlight of the day : goes to Tony Silver #485 – good boat speed, not much banter & a big reduction in bingles gave him the win for the day with a mere 14 points & 4 race wins. Well done Tony.

Saturday IOM Club Champs #4 H’cap results

Hi Skippers,

Another very close and tight afternoon of sailing with 12 skippers and a good 5 – 8 knot South to SW wind.

All were on A rigs and the H’cap system kept the starts clean and the fleet very close together. The wind was shifting from South to SW with the odd hole with no wind. Getting it right for the afternoon was Geoff Wilson #25 on his TS 2. Tony Silver started the day on a high after winning the DF 65’s but after 3 races the H’cap system and battery issues meant he came back to the pack. John Halloran #83 showed how consistent sailing pays off and managed plenty of podium finishes and ended up in 2nd place. Well sailed! 3rd was Tug Boat Phil #147.

A really nice afternoon of close IOM racing.

Congrats to the place getters:

1st Geoff Wilson #25 23 points

2nd John Halloran #83 28 points

3rd Phil Gray #147 29 points

We had a quick rain shower just before the start and another after heat 8. After a short break we managed to sail the last 2 heats in great conditions.

Thanks to those who helped pack up and to Tony silver for taking the trailer.
See you all on Tuesday for our Summer series H’cap racing. 2 race days to go for the series.

Happy sailing,

Tuesday IOM Summer Series #10 results

Hi Skippers,

14 skippers enjoyed the afternoon with B rigs and 12-22 knots of SE wind.

Picking the correct side of the course was tricky and massive gains were made if you got it right.

Phil Gray #147 was off scratch for the H’cap races and was going to be hard to beat. All skippers enjoyed the close racing and for most races it was very clean sailing. Well done to all!

The rain looked threatening after 5 heats so a break was called and we sat in our cars waiting for the showers to clear. After the rain break we managed another 3 heats to give us 9 heats for the day.

Congrats to the place getters:

1st Phil Gray #147 on 18 points

2nd Garry McMahon #57 on 20 points

3rd Simon Kellett #141 on 20 points ( on countback)

Full sailscores results below:

Garry McMahon finished like a train taking two of the last 3 race wins and finished second in the other. That got him into 2nd place.

The std floating buoys were used and the course was long and suited to the conditions.

Thanks to those helping pack up the dinghy , outboard and flag.

See you all on Saturday for Club Champs H’cap sailing.

Happy sailing,

Simon K

DF65 Club Scratch Morning – Tuesday 12th May

Hi skippers
The forecast obviously deterred people this morning with only 8 boats turning up & that included 2 visitors from Southern States.
The SE breeze reached 14 knots in the gusts not the 21 forecast and the rain stayed away. Our local 6 skippers all put on their B rigs – the visitors only had A rigs. One struggled & decided it was too windy for his rig & the other, Bill #78, preserved and managed to get around the course with careful sailing.
Results 🙂

Visitor Bill #78 was not included in the scores above but accumulated 39 points after 2 drops. #980 suffered a steering issue during race 2.
https://www.sailscores.com/SCRSC/2026/df65-club-scratch-day-may-12
Highlight of the day was seeing the competition between the 5 home team boats – all getting at least one race win. Craig #370 won on 13 points closely followed by tugboat Phil #239 who decided that because it was his 59th birthday he would try & hit as many marks as he can in one day ! All very friendly & good to watch.
Next session : Saturday 16th DF65 Summer Scratch series.
Last call for entries to our fun filled Long Line DF65 regatta on 23rd May – 19 entries.
Cheers

IOM Saturday Meter Cup #4 results

Hi Skippers,

A big fleet today with 13 yachts competing in our Hybrid scratch / H’cap racing series.

All skippers were on A rigs with good 10 – 15 knot SE winds which made for a very close and tight afternoon of sailing. We tried and windward and leeward gate course which seemed to work well. 3 scratch races started the day off followed by 5 H’cap heats and then 2 scratch races to finish.

In the scratch races all skippers were sharing the podium places. For the H’cap heats it was Phil Gray #147, Geoff Wilson #25 and Doug Turner #82 sharing the podium places. Doug’s new strip plank timber IOM is a piece of art and gosh is it quick. During one heat Doug ended up sailing Jason McAulay’s yacht as he was unsighted and ended up sailing the wrong boat. We’ve all done that. Geoff Wilson and Phil Gray were having a real ding dong battle between themselves which was good to watch.

Derick Warne #97 sailed well but had to leave at 1/2 time and ended up at SCUH Hospital in emergency with stomach pain. Wow how someone’s day can change. A hope all is well Derick!

Congrats to the place getters:

1st Geoff Wilson #25 22 points

2nd Simon Kellett #58 29 points

3rd Jason McAulay #161 32 points

With such a big fleet it is important that all skippers do the right thing and do their penalty turns if you infringe. It is important to do the right thing for the sake of all skippers and their enjoyment.

Thanks to Bill Heritage for helping score and run the start box when his yacht developed an issue. Thanks to all who helped pack up the bouybots and dinghy.

See you all on Tuesday for our Summer series H’cap racing.

Happy sailing,

Simon K
