Tuesday IOM Summer Series #6 results

Hi Skippers,

We managed to dodge the rain for the afternoon but 1/2 an hour before the scheduled start we were all sitting in our cars in the rain. Gosh we were lucky!!

The wind was gusting to 20 knots and then drop to 8 knots and swing from South to SE and even S West. This kept us all on our toes!!
The 9 skippers sailing for the afternoon enjoyed top of A rig or B rig conditions.

David C-Dobing sailed with a A Rig and managed to end the day with a dry boat and being able to handle the conditions. Well done! The other 8 sailors all had B rigs.

Taking out the afternoon was Garry McMahon #57 with 2 race wins and plenty of podium finishes. Very consistent !!

David C-Dobing #12 with his A rig had a great afternoon and finished in 2nd place. #rd was John Halloran on a tiebreak with Bill Heritage # 59 both on 32 points.

Congrats to the place getters:

1st Garry McMahon #57 on 24 points

2nd David C-Dobing #12 on 29 points

3rd John Halloran #83 on 32 points

4th Bill Heritage #59 on 32 points ( Countback)

Thanks to all for a very enjoyable afternoon with heaps of breeze and close sailing.

Thanks to Tony Silver for taking the trailer and having 2 heat wins.

Well done to all.

See you all on Saturday for :

Club Champs Scratch racing

Happy sailing,

Saturday IOM Club Champs #2 H’cap sailing results

Hi Skippers,

It was a very close afternoon of IOM sailing for the 6 skippers. We managed to dodge the rain and it ended up a really nice afternoon with 5-7 knot SE winds and cloud cover with some patches of blue sky.

The original buoys were used as they work well with a SE breeze.

The H’cap system kept the fleet close together with only 7 points between all 6 skippers.

Dave C-Dobing #12 now has a dry boat and he sailed really well to win the day ahead of Jason McAulay on a close countback both on 21 points. 3rd was John McAulay one point behind on 22 points. Super close sailing!!

Congrats to the place getters:

1st David Clifton – Dobing #12 on 21 points

2nd Jason McAulay #161 on 21 points ( close countback)

3rd John McAulay #194 on 22 points

Thanks to all for a very enjoyable afternoon with no rain.

See you all on Tuesday for Summer series H’cap sailing.

DF65 Summer Handicap series – Tuesday 17th March

Hi Skippers
We were greeted to a SW 3 knot breeze which was supposed to go SE 8 knots but actually died during our first race. This was shortened to one lap otherwise we would still be out there.! The following races saw a slight improvement allowing us to get in 10 handicap races with 9 boats on the water .

Highlight of the Day goes to the 3 podium dwellers – Michael Hickman winning the day convincingly with a mere 15 points ! Then Doug Turner with a consistent performance – 1 x 1st, 2 x 2nds, 2 x 3rds giving him 2nd overall with 28 points – then Chris Wood #933 on 30 points. Chris was one of the 3 founding members of our DF65 class back in 2023 – welcome back Chris & well done today.

A big thank you to Brian Wiley for not sailing but instead he RO’d, scored and mastered the Buoybots all morning … a job well done & very much appreciated.

On Thursday 5 DF65 skippers ( Mark Burdon #275, Craig Wiley #370, Kim MItchell #42, Nick Taylor #917 & myself ), head off to the DF65 National Championships – this is a 3 day event with 58 entries , being held on Grahamstown Dam near Newcastle. The Club also has 4 DF95 skippers ( Craig Wiley, Nick Taylor, Kim Mitchell & Nick Taylor ) entered into the DF95 Nationals being run straight after the 65s.
While I am away Tony has volunteered to step in & run this Saturday’s & Tuesday’s racing – subject to the weather which is looking "wet’ 🙁 I will text out as usual.

Have a great week
Cheers

Tuesday IOM Summer Series #5 H’cap results

Hi Skippers,

After 2 weeks of high wind it was very pleasant to have 3-6 knots East / SE winds.

No chairs getting blown over today.

It was the 5th race of our Summer Series and all 9 skippers enjoyed the afternoon of very close racing.

Geoff Morris was always going to be hard to beat with a starting H’cap of -20. So “yes” he won the day on 16 points with 5 race wins and 2 second places.

2nd was Greg McGill #62 with a consistent afternoon of podium finishes on 27 points.

David C-Dobing was hot on his heals on 28 points and another day with a dry boat. Great to see !!

Congrats to the pace getters:

1st Geoff Morris #96 16 points

2nd Greg McGill #62 27 points

Saturday IOM Meter Cup #2 racing results

Hi Skippers,

Gosh the breeze was up for the day but that gave the 7 skippers heaps of challenging sailing for the afternoon. Solid “B” rig conditions with 20 -25 knots of wind from the SE.

We had 8 skippers sailing if you count Nick Taylor sailing his DF95 with a D rig.

3 scratch races were run followed by 3 H’cap. All skippers had there moment mastering the conditions but the tables turned in other races as others found the lifts and knocks in the correct order.

Rob Priest #17 broke a side stay and continued sailing with no stays and his yacht was really competitive all afternoon. Who needs shrouds anyway.??

After the half time break Nick Taylor scored and ran the start box for the remaining 4 heats. Thanks Nick for your help and support.

Congrats to the place getters:

1st Simon Kellett #58 14 points

2nd Michael Hickman #45 23 points

3rd Gary McMahon #57 24 points

Thanks to Tony for taking the trailer and providing the yummy treats during the break.

It was a fun afternoon for all. Very close racing and great speeds on the downwind legs. Tony Silver finished the day with a dry yacht and David C-Dobing sailed the whole afternoon with no equipment failure. Great to see. Hopefully a dry boat as well.

See you all on Tuesday for Summer series H’cap racing.

Happy sailing,

Tuesday IOM Summer Series #4 H’cap results

Hi Skippers,

Bucket of breeze greeted the 6 sailors for the afternoon of IOM sailing.

We had 20 – 22knot gusts from the SE giving the fleet plenty of speed and close sailing. The B rigs were powered up and keeping control on the downwind legs was key.

Being H’cap sailing the fleet was always kept close together. On the last race of the day 5 seconds separated 4 skippers.

The encouragement award for the afternoon goes to Geoff Morris #96

We struggled with his B rig on his K2 yacht all afternoon. First it was sheet position. Then it was water in the boat and a new rudder servo. The final straw was a broken sheet line during heat 8. Geoff persisted all afternoon but still ended up scoring the last 2 heats. Tough day out!!

Congrats to the pace getters:

1st Simon Kellett #141 17 points

2nd Rob Priest #17 20 points ( on countback with Derick Warne)

3rd Derick Warne #97 20 points

I used the trailer to shield the wind from the seated competitors and it worked a treat.

Thanks to all for a fun afternoon of speed sailing.

See you all on Saturday for Meter Cup scratch / H’cap sailing

Happy sailing,

Tuesday IOM H’cap Annual series #2 results

Hi Skippers,

We had 11 skippers at IOM sailing this afternoon but Tony Silver recovering from his general anesetic yesterday said he would do the stat box and scoring duties.

Garry McMahon ( who had battery issues on Saturday ) arrived at sailing only to find his transmitter was left on for 2 days and had completely flat batteries. He then did the line calling and coaching our new sailor Graham Sargent #47. Thanks for helping him out.

He managed to win heat 7 today. We were all pleased for Graham to finally have a heat win.

The remaining 9 skippers had a challenging afternoon of sailing with 3 to 10 knot East to SE winds. Holes, lifts and knocks greeted the fleet throughout all 10 heats.

Mastering the tricky conditions was Rob Priest # 17. He seemed to be where the wind was all afternoon. Well sailed. !!! 2nd with a very consistent day was Paul Newman sailing his K2 #60. 3rd with a big second half of sailing was Greg McGill on a tiebreak with Derick Warne. John Halloran sailing His V8 also had a good afternoon picking the shifty winds.

Congrats to the place getters:

1st Rob Priest #17

2nd Paul Newman #60

3rd Greg McGill #62

4th Derick Warne #97 (on count back)

Thanks to all who helped pack up the buoybots and trailer. Many hands make light work.

Thanks to Derick for taking the trailer to Tony’s house.

See you all on Saturday for Scratch racing.

Happy sailing,

DF65 Handicap Championship Series – Tuesday 3rd March

Hi Skippers
Today was round 2 of our Handicap Championships – round one got cancelled due to rain last month.
The morning started with a decent SW breeze which quickly shifted to SE before we kicked off . Unfortunately after our midway break the clouds rolled in, the wind became patchy & a very light shower changed things. We only managed to get in 9 races due to lack of constant breeze. 8 boats on the water – all with A+ rigs.

The Sailscores program does not record handicaps – I’ll document them separately & send them out.

Highlight of the Day : happy for this prized accolade to go to Kim Mitchell. His day didn’t start well when he left his sails at home – a quick trip back to Twin Waters got him on the water. 2 x 1sts, 2 x 2nds & a 3rd gave him first overall, one point ahead of Geoff Morris in second.
Thanks to Tony Silver for scoring todays racing.
Next Session : Saturday 7th is the next round of our DF65 Scratch Championships. Lets not talk about the forecast !

Have a great week

DF95 Race Results – Sunday afternoon

Hi all,

It really did not look like Radio Sailing weather at 9am this morning but we gave it a couple of hours and the Weather gods obliged with the sky’s clearing and leaving us with a dry afternoon with some variable conditions.

Winds started Easterly with maybe 4-6 Knots before gradually moving South Easterly during the afternoon and by race 4 the wind had increased with a couple of skippers chaning down from A to B rigs as some strong gusts caused a few nosedives, however, after a couple more races the wind dropped back to a more manageable 5-10 knots for the rest of the afternoon.

Given the morning weather and the forecast of showers for the afternoon it was great to see 11 boats on the water for the second round of the 2026 DF95 Scratch Championship – in the end, the showers kept away and we had an excellent afternoon’s sailing.

Heat wins were shared equally between the 3 overall podium positions with each taking 3 a-piece and John Lemberg picking up the remaining heat win (using a B rig when the wind was at its strongest).

Nick Taylor had a quick start to the day taking 3 wins and a second from the first 4 heats and then held on to the overall lead for the rest of the day ending up just 1 point ahead of Derick Warne who had great comeback from a couple of dropped races to take second place. Roger Frith made amends from a bad start to the day by taking the last 3 heat wins of the day to climb back up to third place.

Thanks to Tony Silver for bringing the trailer and returning to Mark’s and thanks to Craig Wiley for RO’ing and scoring for the second half of the afternoon.

Thanks also to those who were able to park in the carpark for the afternoon to avoid causing any damage to the grassed area.

Next Race day – Wednesday afternoon – 2nd round of the DF95 Handicap Championship from 1pm.
