Well known club member Glen Fitzgerald has been busy at it over the last few years fine tuning his sails and also fittings that he makes with a Laser Printer. As you would know if you have sailed against him he is very fast and always at the top end of the field. Glen is offering his sails and other fittings for sale. These are custom made to the highest standard so check out the pdf document attached for more details and pricing.

Bunnings are to be congratulated as owing to the fact we can’t do any sausage sizzles, Bunnings has given our club $500. This is great support for the community and recognition of radio sailing here on the Sunshine Coast. Expenditure of these funds will be focussed on improving the sailing experience for all members in the future.

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS RE CORONA VIRUS

The SCRSC Committee as at 20th March 2020 has decided that the sailing calendar is suspended immediately until furthur notice. This is in light of the recent Government advice that people should stay home unless the event/meeting is essential. Given the general age group of most members being in the most vulnerable category the committee has suspended all racing activity. Our venue is a public place so if a member/s choose to sail there during this time it is done at their own risk and is not approved or authorised by SCRSC. If members do sail be familiar with the latest health recommendations and implement these vigilantly. Particularly eg staying away if you feel a little unwell, maintaining recommended distances from others, using sanitzers, making contact with others etc.

We know you will understand the committees decision around this challenging situation and we hope to resume our sailing schedule as soon as government advice enables us to.

(Synopsis of interview March 2020)

David has been involved in radio sailing for over 45 years and this is a snapshot of his story.

David first got into radio model boating in the early 1970s as he and his two sons were very involved in radio power boats. In the late 1970’s David along with others formed the Queensland Model Boat Association (QMBA) and later affiliated with the Australian Model Yachting Association (AMYA) which later become the ARYA. In the early 1980s  David’s sons were more into the power boats division while he became more interested in radio sailing.

In the mid 80s David initially was sailing 10 Raters and EC12s locally and as far as Bundaberg.  He also sailed Marbleheads locally and at venues as far away as Cairns including his Brisbane based Carbrook club. Fleets were strong and he eventually won a Queensland Marblehead Title. He moved into the IOM class in the late 1990s sailing mainly at Carbrook and other South Queensland venues.

He became Secretary of the QMBA which eventually had a name change to what is currently the Queensland Radio Yachting Association (QRYA) in the 1990s. In fact he was Secretary of the QMBA and QRYA for a continuous period of 25 years which has to be a record in itself!

David did not compete in many major events from the late 1990s as he and good friend Gil Walker were too involved in scoring major regattas all across the country. A major event in 1987, the EC12 World Titles was combined with the Australian National EC12 Titles. It was held at Pizzy Park Lake on the Gold Coast and was organized mainly by David. The success of this event gave recognition to Queensland and the QMBA as organisers of major events that were of the quality expected of world class regattas. This event put radio sailing in Australia on the map for many across the world with sailors coming from New Zealand and England including the then world champion EC12 sailor John Cleave. Great for Australia that he was beaten by a young Tasmanian, David Shepherd who took out the 1987 World Title.

In those days the scoring, recording and processing was all done on paper and the EC12 World’s Match and Scratch racing needed 6 people to manage the scoring and used the Equal Opportunity Scoring System (EORS). The EORS was the forerunner for the current HMS computerized system.

David travelled the length and breadth of Eastern Australia scoring major radio sailing events with the highlight being Gil’s and David’s scoring of the IOM World Titles conducted at Lake Kawana hosted by Club Kawana Radio Yachting. 82 boats from across the globe attended this event in 2005. In spite of gale force winds picking up the massive marquee that had been erected at Lake Kawana and depositing its truck axle holding down stakes over the road behind the venue, the event proceeded and was hailed an amazing success.

David has been an icon of radio sailing in Australia and selflessly contributed to provide successful services to radio sailors for nearly half a century and at 89 years young is still going strong with him scoring about 700 races in 2019!

Membership renewals are due at the end of March for the 2020 year. As the club is changing its membership time span to a calendar year to align with the racing calendar and club competitions, the renewal fees for 2020 are 75% of the normal yearly fees. This fee covers membership renewals from April to December 2020. Next years fees will be back to the full amount to cover the period from January 2021 to December 2021. You will receive membership renewal forms in March from the Secretary.

Australia Day Summary 2020

“What an awesome day!!!

It was a first on a number of levels and areas! First time SCRSC has sailed an event at the Brightwater Hotel; first time we have had our two major divisions IOMs and Lasers sailing together; first time all of our members have come together to compete and support each other at the one event; first time a hybrid handicapped formal regatta to determine the final placings and finally a first for Betty winning her first regatta!!!

Damien , “Banger” (the MC) and the Brightwater crew were amazing (as was their discounted lunch which was sensational!) and are keen to have us back in the future! Thanks to them for organizing the sponsors; being Stone And Wood Ale and Janz champagne as well as the first prize of $150 for each division compliments of the Brightwater Hotel! Well done guys!!

I am most proud of the level of interest from the patrons of Australia Day taking an interest in radio sailing, buying raffle tickets to raffle off all the boats for podium finishes and generally raising the profile of radio sailing in the community and with the media! There was  a lot of interest in radio sailing generated which is great for the profile of our sport and our club!!

On the sailing front a fluky NE breeze presented itself most of the day making for very tricky conditions with no one taking anything for granted until you were over the line. Each division managed nine races which made for a relaxed and social time for all participants. There was the usual high standard of sportsmanship we have in our club and very few incidents were observed. Very clean sailing for the most part. Well done to all!!

Congratulations in the Laser Division to Neil Carroll (Not That Hippie Chick) in First; Bob Caldow (Tradewinds) in Second and Roger Smith (Jolly Roger) in Third.

Congratulations in the  IOM Division to Betty Churcher (Betty) in First; Kim Mitchell (Mad Dog) in Second and John McAulay (Banana Boat) in Third.

Attached are the score sheets for both divisions showing placings through the day, handicaps etc. (NB. The final result for the IOMs wasn’t called outside the first three.)

Special thanks are in order to the umpires (The Admiral and DC); Clair for scoring; The Committee for their work behind the scenes and the many volunteers who stepped in where required which was awesome!”
